Are you a “Man in The Arena”?

Have you ever heard the famous speech "Man in the Arena" by Theodore Roosevelt?

If not, (or if you need a refresher) here's a snippet of my favorite part...

"It is not the critic who counts; not the man who points out how the strong man stumbles, or where the doer of deeds could have done them better. The credit belongs to the man who is actually in the arena, whose face is marred by dust and sweat and blood; who strives valiantly; who errs, who comes short again and again, because there is no effort without error and shortcoming; but who does actually strive to do the deeds; who knows great enthusiasms, the great devotions; who spends himself in a worthy cause; who at the best knows in the end the triumph of high achievement, and who at the worst, if he fails, at least fails while daring greatly, so that his place shall never be with those cold and timid souls who neither know victory nor defeat"

Beautiful, right?

And if you're someone who's doing the work to BUILD your health as you get older, rather than just "growing old gracefully" like most people do...

My hat goes off to you.

You are "The Man in the Arena."

And I see you.

And I am rooting for you!!!

And when you look around, and you see that there are not many of us around...it's how you know you are unique.

The arena is FULL of spectators.

Yet scarily LOW on fighters.

And If you attempted to recruit 100 "spectators" to join you in the arena, you would get 95 different reasons why they CAN'T or WON'T.

I know this to be true because I used to spend a lot of my time trying to PULLLLL the unwilling into the arena.

But I learned my lesson...

Spectators and fighters think differently.

Spectators are not interested in the fight.

And the fight to build health and STAY HEALTHY as we get older is REAL.

Saying no to the temptation of crappy food, avoiding alcohol, physically challenging your body regularly, and being disciplined enough to go to bed at a reasonable time at night are not things most people are willing to CONSISTENTLY do.

And if you're a single guy, no family, no kids, a job that you don't particularly like, and you are falling off the health cliff.

The only victim here is YOU. 

And because I LOVE personal freedoms, I am all about you doing whatever the hell you want with your life.

BUT - If you're a father, a husband, a son, a grandfather, an uncle, or in some way a role model to others.

It's not just about YOU.

And you have a responsibility to those people.

You see, when I help a guy get their health in order, I get messages from their wives...

"Thank you so much for helping Dave! As you know, he has lost 30# and he has been off his BP meds for almost 3 months. Me and the kids are so proud of him. We look forward to having him around a lot longer and we want him to be healthy! We can't thank you enough for giving us back our old Dave!"

You see, the over 40 men who I'm lucky enough to spend time with in the Arena have a "WHY" that's much bigger than themselves.

In this season of their life, it's no longer about being shredded, having a six pack, or the biggest bench press.

Rather, they want to be healthy for their family so they can enjoy more QUALITY time with their kids.

They want to say "YES" to all the family adventures that lie ahead.

And they NEVER want to become a burden on their loved ones because they've let themselves go.

For these men, investing the time and the energy into themselves is an unselfish endeavor.

How do I know?

Because I remember the way my wife felt during my 3 year cancer battle.

I am pretty sure it was harder on her than it was on me.

And since that time almost 20 years ago, I've made it my mission to do everything in my power to keep myself healthy

...for HER

...for my Mom

...for my Dad

...and for my Son

I know that, without a doubt,  when I am better, they are better 🙂
